2D Patterns

I tried different tutorials for creating 2D patterns, and I tried spending some time in not only recreating the forms and shapes but understanding how Grasshopper works in creating such intricate designs.

Once I had explored a couple of tutorials, I decided to merge 2 concepts together. From the first one, I extracted the grid-like concept in order to rotate, reflect, or do any kind of variant to the squares that comprise the grid in order to actually get a pattern. In the second tutorial I learned how to create random lines on a surface and rotate the plains in which the points are laid out to get that feeling of “randomness”.

Here’s the link to the first tutorial in which I learned how to make Truchet Tiles. And here’s a video of my understanding of how it works and the components I extracted for my final product.

Here’s the link for the second tutorial, which explains how to create random crossing patterns in 2D. I also created a video to show my understanding of how the pattern works, and what components I’d be taking along for my final pattern.

Finally, I combined what I learned on both tutorials and files and created a new grid-like random lines pattern in 2D, and here’s how it works.

Iterations of the 2D patterns

In order to show-case the application of the patterns I went ahead and did a couple of mock-ups of the patterns being used in real life. Both mock ups were created in Photoshop from downloadable .psd files from www.FreePik.com.
